Best time to visit Munich
Compare months and seasons by weather, crowds, hotel prices and key events. Pick the month that fits your priorities.
Season overview
Sweet spot: April–May and late September (pre-Oktoberfest)
Temperatures 12–22 °C, clear skies, everything open. May is arguably Munich's best month. Late September is perfect — before Oktoberfest madness, warm days and the Alps starting to show autumn colours.
Summer (July–August): warm and beautiful, peak prices
The city is lovely at 20–25 °C and the lakes (Starnberger See, Chiemsee) fill up. Expect peak prices and queues. Englischer Garten's Eisbach surfers and beer gardens are at their best.
Winter (December–February): cold, festive and cheap
Temperatures drop to -5 to 5 °C. The Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz is one of Germany's finest. Skiing in the Alps is excellent. January–February offer the best hotel deals.
Key events
Oktoberfest (late Sep–early Oct) — the world's largest folk festival. Christkindlmarkt (December). Starkbierfest (March). Frühlingsfest (April).
